Special effects with the hemstitch needle
The hemstitch needle, also known as a wing, sword, or wing needle, is used for decorative stitching, openwork embroidery, and white work in loosely woven fabrics such as linen. When sewing, holes are created in the seam, which act as a decorative element. This allows hemstitching to be easily sewn with a sewing machine, even without – as with hand sewing – pulling out fabric threads beforehand. This traditional hemstitch effect is achieved by the "wings" on both sides of the needle shank, which gently push aside the fabric threads. The sewing thread supports this effect by preventing the fabric threads from returning to their original position.
